Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Engineering is responsible for managing, coaching, tracking and reporting through their heads of department – CIP and Project Engineering a highly skilled team in which the departments are responsible for designing and implementing common Contract Logistics processes tied to new facility construction (greenfield), client migration (brownfield) and deployment of technology with continued efforts related to driving continuous performance improvement across all Contract Logistics facilities within geographic area of responsibility.  It also includes indirect responsibilities to drive the organizations enterprise baseline of engineering in Canada and LATAM.   

The Senior Director is responsible for maintaining department budgets, financial and engineering metrics that will meet or exceed performance goals.  In addition, this position is also responsible for direct, develop and mentoring of the team to build engineering competency and grow talent within the organization.  This person will have responsibility to support operations in order to meet budgeted operating profits and cost reduction objectives.  This role also works with regional peers around the globe to ensure consistent best practices are deployed across the contract logistics network. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Research/Analysis:

  • Keep informed and up to date on best-in-class tools and techniques needed for operational design
  • Track all projects and provide communication and guidance to senior management team
  • Determine and enlist resources required to support targeted changes in support of CI project including Engineering, WMS Developers, Operations, Safety, Security, Quality, Etc.
  • Analyze workflow including inbound, put away, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping and VAS processes to ensure accuracy and ability to execute or identify opportunities for improvement
  • Ensures all distribution system functionality is configured to optimize performance (e.g., WMS, LMS)
  • Analyzes contractual commitments, customer specifications, design changes and other data to develop optimum solutions for operation
  • Performs special research or technical studies critical to logistic support functions
  • Performs cost/benefit tradeoff analysis and develop ROI business cases for recommended projects involving process, system, or technology change
  • Develops logistics engineering strategies with the senior management team
  • Participation in Quality Planning sessions “DQP” with new clients validating requirements, processes and ensure successful deployment of project

 

 

Documentation/Reporting:

 

Document and communicate common processes for all distribution functions within scope of responsibility

Review data and summarize expectations to address gaps with team or in operation

Identify areas for improvement based on analysis of data, team feedback and observations

Maintain repository of lessons learned from all projects in effort to continuously improve and avoid repeat of past mistakes

 

Communication:

  • Communicate opportunities for improvement
  • Help determine key metrics and provide recommendations to guide management
  • Assist with developing/presenting training materials and classes for distribution processes

 

Relationships:

  • Bring cross-functional teams together to collaborate on projects
  • Support the labor management program, including methods and procedures, engineered labor standards,
  • Ensure alignment among all operations’ policies, procedures and ongoing improvement projects

 

LEAN Operations:

  • Educate team in LEAN expanding knowledge base to support and maintain a CI culture
  • Facilitate use of LEAN methodology in collaboration with our global team and recommend solutions
  • Deploy statistical tools such as Pareto Charts, Histograms and Cause & Effect Diagrams
  • Leverage Value Stream Map or Flow Diagram of process to identify critical to quality points
  • Use of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of the process being evaluated to quantify impact
  • Maintain SME in proven industry methods and tools such as Six Sigma DMAIC, value-stream mapping, and 5S
  • Work with leadership to drive continual improvement programs, Kaizen events, and workshops
  • Set the standard for innovation within strategic and operational problem solving
  • Apply traditional manufacturing-based concepts to a variety of material handling environments
  • Ensure that all projects include a sustainability component and drive adherence within the organization
  • Lead all LEAN efforts in an organized manner with steering team deployment and roadmap/critical path development
  • Illustrate continual improvement successes in a case study before & after format that quantifies value

 

Project Management:

  • Assist with developing and rolling out growth strategies and projects
  • Determine feasibility of projects factoring costs, available space, schedule limitations, company goals, technical requirements and economic factors
  • Develop and implement project activities plans and timelines, coordinate subcontractors, facility management and field service personnel, and resolve problems in area of logistics to ensure meeting of contractual commitments

 

Other Duties:

  • Drive standard approach for the Americas – coordinating with Canadian and LATAM counterpart
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Backup to Head of BCM Americas as needed
  • Conduct performance reviews of direct reports and manage company P&O systems as required
  • Develop yearly budgets for department
  • Compliance with the Internal Labor Regulations and P&O Procedures.
  • Compliance with Security, Safety and Hygiene Measures & Procedures.
  • Manage team to deliver high quality, on-time and within budget engineering scope for new business implementations, relocations, new property builds and facility closures / consolidations
  • Manage team to deliver high quality CIP projects that meet committed annual cost savings targets working in collaboration with operations and other functional areas of the business as needed

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly manage 2 – 3 Senior Manager or Directors of Engineer for US, CA and LATAM
  • Indirectly manage 18 – 22 Engineering resources supporting US geography

 

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Industrial Engineering required or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a supply chain (warehouse/4walls) role with extensive experience in:
    • New Business Implementations
    • Driving Continual Improvement and Financial Savings in Operations
  • Prior leadership positions directing Senior Leaders and frontline Engineers in 3PL/supply chain environment

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly manage 2 – 3 Senior Manager or Directors of Engineer for US, CA and LATAM

Computer / Other Skills:  

·         Advanced knowledge of statistics
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications with advanced knowledge of Excel, Access and Power BI
  • Experience with AI tools and applications
  • Extensive understanding of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) tied to capabilities
  • AutoCAD
  • Lean methodologies
  • Six Sigma tools
  • Knowledge of various storage methodologies as well as material handling equipment
  • Storage and process design
 
Other Desired Skills:
·         E-commerce experience including starting up small to large volume solutions
·         Experience in multiple warehouse automation applications (Pick to Light, Automated Sortation, Voice Pick, conveyor design, etc.)
·         Experience in LMS implementation and/or steady state execution
·         Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously

Language Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • English (reading, writing, verbal), Spanish highly desired
