Summary

The Manager, Operations – LTL Express is responsible for leading the day-to-day execution and performance of DSV Road’s LTL Express operations. This role ensures freight moves safely, efficiently, and within committed service levels across both brokerage and asset-based networks.

 

The Manager drives operational excellence by overseeing shipment execution, terminal coordination, carrier performance, and team productivity while maintaining a strong focus on on-time delivery, service reliability, and profitability. This position serves as a key leader within the operation, partnering closely with Sales, Account Management, and Customer Service to deliver high-quality, time-sensitive transportation solutions. The role balances tactical execution with continuous improvement, ensuring processes, systems, and teams are aligned to meet customer expectations and business objectives.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage daily LTL Express operations, including load planning, routing, dispatch, and real-time shipment management for time-definite freight.
  • Oversee execution of expedited and service-sensitive shipments, ensuring adherence to strict pickup and delivery windows.
  • Monitor operational workflows to ensure freight is executed in alignment with customer requirements, transit commitments, and cost expectations.
  • Drive on-time performance and service reliability across LTL carrier networks, terminals, and cross-dock operations.
  • Manage and develop a team of operations personnel, providing coaching, performance management, and ongoing development.
  • Establish clear expectations, accountability standards, and performance metrics for the team.
  • Analyze key performance indicators including on-time pickup/delivery, transit time adherence, margin, cost per shipment, and exception management.
  • Lead daily and weekly operational reviews to address service failures, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate closely with Sales and Account Management to support customer growth, onboarding, and service strategy alignment.
  • Serve as an escalation point for critical shipments, service failures, and high-priority customer issues.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with LTL carriers, ensuring capacity availability and consistent service performance.
  • Oversee routing decisions, consolidation strategies, and carrier selection to optimize cost and service outcomes.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce transit variability, and improve customer experience.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and company safety standards, as well as adherence to LTL carrier requirements and service guidelines.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (Operations, IT, Finance, Safety, and Commercial) to support system enhancements, reporting, and operational initiatives.
  • Support implementation of new LTL Express services, tools, and technologies to enhance visibility and execution.
  • Maintain accurate operational reporting and provide insights to leadership on performance trends and opportunities.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives to expand and strengthen DSV’s LTL Express product offering.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
  • 5+ years of experience in transportation, freight brokerage, or 3PL operations, with strong emphasis on LTL and/or expedited freight.
  • 3–5 years of leadership experience in an operations, dispatch, or transportation management role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing time-sensitive or service-critical freight operations.
  • Strong understanding of LTL carrier networks, terminal operations, and transit time management.
  • Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and shipment visibility tools required.

 

Skills & Competencies

  • Proven leadership ability with a hands-on, results-driven management style.
  • Strong knowledge of LTL Express operations, including time-definite services, terminal networks, and expedited freight handling.
  • Deep understanding of LTL pricing, routing, consolidation, and carrier performance management.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and drive performance improvements.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills across internal teams, customers, and carrier partners.
  • Ability to manage high-pressure, time-sensitive situations with urgency and sound decision-making.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly resolve service disruptions and operational challenges.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for reporting and analysis.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and transportation compliance requirements.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with focus on efficiency, service quality, and scalability.

 

Physical Demands

The position primarily requires extended periods of sitting and working at a computer. Frequent use of hands for keyboarding, mouse operation, and communication tools is required. Occasional standing, walking, bending, and light lifting (up to 20 pounds) may occur. The employee must be able to communicate clearly and effectively via phone, video conferencing, and in person.

 

Work Environment

This role operates in a professional office environment within a fast-paced LTL Express operations setting. The position requires frequent interaction with internal teams, customers, and carriers, often managing time-sensitive and high-priority shipments. Occasional visits to terminals, cross-dock facilities, or carrier locations may occur, where the employee may be exposed to varying temperatures, active freight operations, and noise levels ranging from moderate to loud. Flexibility in work hours may be required to support time-definite service demands and operational needs.

 

For this position, the expected base pay range is $90,000.00 – $105,000.00 Annual. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.
