Summary

The Transportation Security & Cargo Specialist is a field-based position responsible for providing in-transit security support for high-value, high-risk, and security-sensitive cargo moving throughout the United States.  This role operates a company-provided escort vehicle and accompanies designated shipments from origin through destination, maintaining shipment visibility and monitoring changing transportation and security conditions throughout transit.

 

The Transportation Security & Cargo Specialist works closely with drivers, dispatch, Operations, customers, and security personnel to support shipment integrity, identify potential risks, coordinate appropriate responses, and ensure company and customer security requirements are followed.  This position requires strong situational awareness, sound judgment, reliability, and communication, as well as extensive travel, irregular schedules, and frequent overnight or multi-day assignments.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate a company-provided escort vehicle while accompanying high-value, high-risk, and security-sensitive shipments.
  • Maintain appropriate proximity to escorted shipments based on security requirements and roadway conditions.
  • Monitor transportation and security conditions throughout transit and identify potential risks, unusual activity, or changes in operating conditions.
  • Assess changing circumstances and take appropriate action within established security procedures and authority.
  • Maintain regular communication with drivers, dispatch, Operations, customers, and designated security personnel.
  • Provide required shipment location, status, and security updates throughout transit.
  • Coordinate planned and unplanned stops, fueling, rest periods, and overnight locations with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Review routes and planned stops for potential security concerns and communicate recommended adjustments.
  • Respond to route deviations, unexpected stops, accidents, mechanical issues, suspicious activity, and other security-related incidents.
  • Determine when security concerns require escalation to Operations, Security leadership, customers, law enforcement, or other appropriate parties.
  • Support chain-of-custody and shipment security requirements from origin through final delivery.
  • Follow and apply company, customer, and shipment-specific security procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Protect confidential information regarding customers, cargo, routes, schedules, locations, and security procedures.
  • Complete required trip reports, mileage records, security documentation, incident reports, and other operational records.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles and report safety or maintenance concerns.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles in a clean, professional, and operationally ready condition.
  • Participate in reviews of security incidents and provide observations or recommendations for improving transportation security practices.
  • Represent the company professionally when interacting with customers, drivers, facilities, law enforcement, and other parties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of transportation security and operation.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in transportation, trucking, logistics, security, military, law enforcement, high-value cargo operations, or a related field required.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean and insurable driving record required.
  • Experience supporting high-value, high-risk, or security-sensitive transportation preferred.
  • Experience with chain-of-custody requirements, cargo security procedures, incident response, expedited freight, or long-distance transportation preferred.
  • Must be able to pass applicable background checks, motor vehicle record checks, drug screening, and other required employment or security screening requirements.

  • Strong situational awareness with the ability to recognize potential security concerns and changing operational conditions.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to respond appropriately within established procedures and authority.
  • Strong commitment to safe driving practices and the ability to remain alert during extended transportation assignments.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide clear, timely, and accurate updates.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow security requirements, procedures, and customer-specific instructions.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication and coordination with drivers, Operations, customers, and security personnel.
  • High degree of reliability, professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with GPS/navigation systems, transportation applications, mobile communication devices, and related technology.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and operate a passenger vehicle or light-duty truck for extended periods.  The employee must be able to remain alert and maintain situational awareness during extended transportation assignments; safely enter and exit vehicles repeatedly throughout an assignment; and use computers, mobile devices, navigation systems, and communication equipment throughout the workday.  The employee must also be able to perform the essential functions of the position during extended and irregular work schedules.

 

Work Environment

This is a primarily field-based position requiring extensive travel throughout the United States, including regular long-distance and interstate travel, frequent overnight and multi-day assignments, and extended periods of driving and shipment monitoring.  The employee may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, irregular schedules, and short-notice assignments based on customer and operational requirements.  Work is performed in varying weather, traffic, roadway, and geographic conditions and requires regular interaction with drivers, customers, facilities, Operations, security personnel, law enforcement, and other external parties.

 

The Transportation Security Specialist does not replace law enforcement or an armed security service and is not authorized to engage in unsafe physical intervention. Suspected criminal activity, imminent threats, and emergencies must be handled in accordance with company procedures and escalated to appropriate authorities and company contacts.

For this position, the expected base pay range is $27.00 – $33.00 Hourly. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.
