Under general supervision, the Material Handler – Recycling is responsible for supporting safe and efficient warehouse operations through the collection, sorting, movement, and processing of recyclable materials, waste, cardboard, pallets, and other debris throughout the facility.

This position maintains warehouse floors, aisles, work areas, recycling stations, and designated waste collection areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. The Material Handler – Recycling operates approved material handling and recycling equipment, including balers, pallet jacks, and other equipment as trained and authorized.

As part of the DSV team, Associates are expected to meet company objectives in the areas of performance, safety, and quality and comply with all corporate and site-specific policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect trash, cardboard, plastic, shrink wrap, pallets, and other recyclable or waste materials from designated areas throughout the warehouse.
  • Sort recyclable and waste materials into the appropriate designated containers, bins, staging areas, or processing areas.
  • Break down cardboard and prepare recyclable materials for processing.
  • Safely load and operate cardboard balers and/or compactors in accordance with site procedures, manufacturer instructions, and applicable safety requirements.
  • Remove, stage, and transport completed bales or other processed recyclable materials to designated areas as trained and authorized.
  • Empty warehouse trash and recycling receptacles and transport materials to appropriate collection or disposal locations.
  • Maintain warehouse floors, aisles, workstations, dock areas, recycling stations, and other operational areas free of trash, loose cardboard, shrink wrap, wood, debris, and other potential hazards.
  • Sweep warehouse floors and clean debris from designated operational and pedestrian areas as necessary to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Maintain baler, compactor, recycling, pallet, and waste collection areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Collect, organize, stack, and move pallets, totes, bins, carts, and other reusable or recyclable materials to designated locations.
  • Utilize manual pallet jacks, powered material handling equipment, carts, bins, and other approved equipment to transport waste and recyclable materials throughout the facility.
  • Monitor recycling and waste collection points throughout the shift and service them as needed to prevent overflow or unsafe conditions.
  • Identify materials requiring special handling and follow established site procedures for proper disposal or escalation.
  • Inspect work areas and equipment for unsafe conditions, damage, or maintenance concerns and immediately report issues to leadership.
  • Promptly identify and report spills, trip hazards, damaged pallets, loose materials, or other conditions that could affect warehouse safety.
  • Follow all required PPE, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, MHE, baler/compactor, and other applicable safety procedures.
  • Support site housekeeping, 5S, recycling, waste-reduction, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Maintain materials, equipment, and assigned work areas in a neat, clean, and orderly fashion.
  • Assist Operations with general warehouse material movement and housekeeping needs as directed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

The emphasis on clear travel paths, corrugate collection, gondola/bin movement and baler/compactor areas is consistent with current large-warehouse recycling positions. Comparable material-handler roles also specifically include cardboard baling, pallet organization, recycling streams, and removal of warehouse trash/debris.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Six months of experience in a warehouse, recycling, material handling, general labor, or similar role preferred.
  • Previous experience with recycling equipment, balers, pallet jacks, or material handling equipment preferred.
  • Must be able to work in unregulated warehouse temperatures during warmer and colder months.

Computer Skills

  • Basic computer skills.

Certificates & Licenses

  • Satisfactory completion of required material handling equipment training and certification.
  • Must complete all required site training before independently operating balers, compactors, or other recycling equipment.

Language Skills

  • English (reading, writing, verbal).

Mathematical Skills

  • Basic math.

Other Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend written safety procedures, work instructions, equipment instructions, and warning labels.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and promptly report or correct hazards within the scope of the position.
  • Ability to properly sort and handle recyclable and waste materials according to site procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate pallet jacks, carts, balers, compactors, and other assigned equipment following required training.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to safety, organization, and warehouse cleanliness.
  • Ability to prioritize work based on operational and safety needs.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced warehouse environment.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and regularly bend, reach, push, pull, squat, and walk throughout the facility.
  • Work overtime as dictated by business needs, whether mandatory or voluntary.

The physical emphasis is appropriate for this type of position. Current corrugate/recycling warehouse roles specifically describe frequent walking throughout the facility, moving loaded collection containers, bending/reaching, and handling loads up to approximately 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works primarily in a warehouse environment and may be exposed to varying temperatures, dust, debris, noise, moving equipment, recyclable materials, and normal conditions associated with warehouse operations. The employee is required to follow all applicable safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment.

For this position, the expected base pay range is $23.00 - $25.50/hourly. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.
