SUMMARY

 

The Logistics Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing common contract logistics processes and driving continuous performance improvement as well as providing engineering support for expanding business implementations. The Logistics Engineer supports multifaceted operation based on a detailed understanding of client needs and for creating the overall facility layout & design and determining appropriate equipment supporting the concept of operations, as well as physical implementation of the solution. 

This role is also responsible for maintaining financial and engineering metrics that will meet or exceed performance goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Research/Analysis:

  • Ensure all distribution system functionality are configured to optimize performance (e.g., warehouse management, labor management, slotting and reporting applications)
  • Establishes work measurement programs and analyzes work samples to develop standards for labor utilization
  • Analyze contractual commitments, customer specifications, design changes and other data to drive continuous improvement and meet or exceed expectations of customer
  • Perform special research or technical studies critical to logistic support functions
  • Perform cost/benefit tradeoff analysis and develop ROI business cases for recommended projects involving process, system or technology change
  • Forecasts facility, vehicle, staffing and/or material handling equipment needs in order to improve cost, utilization, service, and efficiencies
  • Conducts studies to determine the most efficient sequence of operations and workflow by analyzing production costs, process flow charts, and production schedules
  • Recommends methods for maximizing the utilization of production facilities and personnel by:
    • restructuring job duties, reorganizing work flow, layout, equipment, and in adherence with governmental, health, safety, and other regulations. 
  • Drive labor planning tool tailored to the client’s business and agreed upon operating processes
  • Identify and procure all necessary capital expense items to support successful launch of operation
  • Full understanding of the approved Solutions pricing tied to the client’s award of business to DSV
  • Participation in “Advance Quality Planning” sessions with new clients validating requirements and processes
  • Determine and gain agreement of final design of facility, operating process, equipment type and quantity
  • Partner with key functional groups that are part of implementation (HR, IT, Operations, etc.) to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)
  • Develop and provide action items to Project Management that will lead to successful implementation

 

 

Documentation/Reporting: 

 

  • Document and communicate common processes for all distribution functions within scope of responsibility
  • Review data and summarize expectations to address gaps in operation
  • Identify areas for improvement based on analysis of data and observations

 

Communication: 

 

  • Communicate opportunities for improvement
  • Help determine key metrics and provide recommendations to guide management 
  • Assist with developing/presenting training materials and classes for distribution processes

 

Relationships: 

 

  • Bring cross-functional teams together to collaborate on projects
  • Support the labor management program, including methods and procedures, engineered labor standards, incentive programs and program policies
  • Ensure alignment among all operations’ policies, procedures and ongoing improvement projects

 

LEAN Operations:

 

  • Educate team members in LEAN expanding knowledge base to support and develop a sustainable CI culture
  • Facilitate LEAN methodology and recommend solutions to specific business case issues
  • Understand and apply essential LEAN such as seven wastes
  • Utilize statistical tools such as Pareto Charts, Histograms and Cause & Effect Diagrams
  • Create a Value Stream Map or Flow Diagram of process to identify critical to quality points
  • Develop Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of the process being evaluated to quantify impact
  • Maintain SME in proven industry methods and tools such as Six Sigma DMAIC, value-stream mapping, and 5S
  • Work with leadership to drive continual improvement programs, Kaizen events, and workshops
  • Set the standard for innovation within strategic and operational problem solving
  • Apply traditional manufacturing-based concepts to a variety of material handling environments
  • Ensure that all projects include a sustainability component and drive adherence within the organization
  • Lead all LEAN efforts in an organized manner with steering team deployment and roadmap/critical path development
  • Illustrate continual improvement successes in a case study before & after format that quantifies value

 

Project Management:

 

  • Assist with developing and rolling out growth strategies and projects
  • Determine feasibility of projects factoring costs, available space, schedule limitations, company goals, technical requirements and economic factors
  • Develop and implement project activities plans and timelines, coordinate subcontractors, facility management and field service personnel, and resolve problems in area of logistics to ensure meeting of contractual commitments

OTHER DUTIES

 

  • Performs other duties as required
  • Follow up on the Quality Management System.
  • Compliance to the Internal Labor Regulations and to the Human Resources Procedures.
  • Compliance to Security, Safety and Hygiene Measures & Procedures.
  • Follow up on the operational procedures of the area assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and/or Experience

 

  • Bachelor Degree in Industrial Engineering required or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in a supply chain (warehouse/4walls) environment

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

 

  • Advanced knowledge of statistics.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications with advanced knowledge of Excel, Access and Power BI
  • Insight into a Warehouse Management Systems allowing for understanding of system capabilities
  • AutoCAD
  • Lean methodologies
  • Six sigma tools
  • Knowledge of various storage methodologies as well as material handling equipment
  • Storage and process design
  Other Desired Skills:
  • E-commerce experience including starting up small to large volume solutions
  • Experience in multiple warehouse automation applications (Pick to Light, Automated Sortation, Voice Pick, conveyor design, etc.)
  • Experience in LMS implementation and/or steady state execution
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously

Working Conditions

  • Based on the nature of DSV Business, Position may perform the assigned activities inside any DSV sites and change shifts as needed.
